I am really excited about the final design solution of this newsletter as I had the opportunity to use photos that I took of San Antonio while visiting there. These photos are part of my photography portfolio which can be found here.

The process of creating this newsletter began with doing research into other travel and tourism newsletter layouts. I start with research so that I can gain some insight as to what makes an effective newsletter in this industry. Once I had gathered all the information and found a few newsletter layouts that I could use as inspiration, I began sketching on paper my own layout ideas. Sketching out ideas help me not spend too much time figuring out layout within InDesign, as once I am within the digital environment I aim to spend more time executing rather than discovering.

Layout Design Sketches

When it came to this particular newsletter, I had the idea to place copy behind The Alamo in the header image. In order to execute this idea, I imported the image of the Alamo into Photoshop and used the pen tool to cutout The Alamo, allowing me to place copy behind The Alamo wherever I would like.

Afterwards, I opened up InDesign and begin assembling the newsletter based off the sketch I liked the most and more importantly, that I believe will suit the information the best. As I got to end of putting the layout together, I felt the design could have been stronger as there were certain aspects that were not in alignment, making the layout seem messy and disjointed. My eyes also wanted to see some closure and confinment to the layout.

As I pondered the layout, I began to see another possibility. I added some thin rectangles to the top as well as the bottom and extended the header image to come in contact with the long blue rectangle on the left of the layout. These changes, along the the alinement corrections in the copy and images, displayed more of a cohesive layout solution that had strong visual points for the eye to settle on.
